Residence JL E
This project is a residence co-inhabited by a couple and three cats. By utilizing vertical layering and spatial hierarchy, it shapes a three-dimensional living environment shared by both humans and felines.
The layout is clearly divided into upper and lower levels: the ground floor is the public zone, encompassing functions such as the living room, dining kitchen, and kitchen island; the second floor is the private domain, accommodating the bedroom, entertainment room, and master bathroom. The central steel-structure spine staircase is a visual focal point; besides connecting circulation, it functions as a sculptural element that establishes the overall tone and tension of the space.
The concept of “cohabitation” extends to the second-floor entertainment room, which is designed as a “wooden box” structure cantilevered in the air. A glass interface, elevated 40 centimeters above the floor, extends the line of sight and bridges the height difference between the residents and the cats.
The soft furnishings in the owners’ previous home were predominantly LOFT style, a preference we continued by basing the design on a foundation of low-chroma grey hues and wood textures. Stained birch and black ironwork create a warm yet rigid dialogue. The entire residence is constructed using rational lines and modern industrial materials.
